For dogs with fur that need regular haircuts, I would advise that if the hair is long and you feel knots and tangles in their fur, bring them for a groom as soon as you can. For other breeds, you may not see your dog\u2019s eyes very well\u2014that\u2019s another major sign to bring them in for a groom. You just don\u2019t want their fur length to be so fluffy that you can\u2019t see any features on the dog (legs, eyes, tail, etc.). In those cases, they are likely very matted!<\/p>\n<p>For dogs that shed a lot, if the dog isn\u2019t groomed a lot from the start, you\u2019ll notice a lot of hair falling out regularly. But if the dog is groomed every couple of months for a de-shed the dead hairs, the shedding should start to slow. Then, you can wait longer periods between grooms. The dog will obviously keep shedding, but our goal is to decrease the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doggroomingcourse.com\/2019\/04\/6-best-ways-remove-dog-hair-around-your-home-dog-grooming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">loose hair in your house<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_does_my_dog_hate_being_groomed\"><\/span>Why does my dog hate being groomed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A fair amount of dogs <em>do not<\/em> like being groomed. Not every dog can sit like perfect angels! So, I\u2019ll ask you questions like\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has he had a bad experience before?<\/li>\n<li>Did another groomer accidentally cut him?<\/li>\n<li>How does he act after the grooming appointment at home?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All these questions will help give me an idea of where their dog\u2019s dislike of grooms stems from. Give as much information to your dog groomer as possible. They\u2019ll be able to work with the dog to give him some extra reassurance during the groom.<\/p>\n<p>I groom a couple of dogs that I am still working on acclimatizing them to the dog grooming process. One of them, for instance, would not let me touch her legs the first time I groomed her. Now, she is starting to be more comfortable with me handling them and scissoring them. Be patient, it just takes a little time!<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_I_shave_my_double-coated_dog\"><\/span>Can I shave my double-coated dog?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This has been a popular question lately. As a newbie groomer a couple of years ago, I didn\u2019t really know how to answer this question.<\/p>\n<p>Before attending a dog grooming academy, I would shave a Golden Retriever right down to the skin. I never really understood why they never looked good shaved or why it was such hard work to shave those coats. Once you take that protection away from them, they will be exposed to all the elements. Also, if you shave the undercoat, it might not grow back normally. It might grow in patches, be a different color, or won\u2019t even grow back at all. I don\u2019t think owners realize that.<\/p>\n<p>Many dog owners believe their dogs are hot with all that fur when they actually need it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doggroomingcourse.com\/2018\/06\/6-ways-to-keep-your-pet-cool-this-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to maintain a cool body temperature<\/a> in the summer. So when someone calls about shaving their husky, I simply tell them that we do not shave down those dogs and explain why. Because of what I learned in my grooming classes, I am confident in my stance.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I will inform them of what we <em>can<\/em> do. We can do a dashed (brush them thoroughly) and trim up the rear, legs, belly, etc., but I won\u2019t take a clipper to their dog.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_you_just_leave_the_mats_in_my_dogs_fur_I_like_the_fur_longer\"><\/span><span lang=\"EN-CA\">Can you just leave the mats in my dog\u2019s fur? They are both uncomfortable when they\u2019re present and also uncomfortable to shave out. Oddly enough, some clients have asked me to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doggroomingcourse.com\/2016\/11\/pet-groomers-matted-dog-coat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shave out the mats<\/a> and keep the rest of the hair long. Well, it doesn\u2019t really work like that.<\/p>\n<p>If the dog has a coat that easily gets knotted, trust me, there will be knots hiding <em>everywhere<\/em>. You can\u2019t really just shave those out! Sometimes, your dog may not want to be brushed out. So your only option is to start fresh.<\/p>\n<p>The best solution to keep the dog comfortable and have a longer coat is to prevent mats from occurring. I tell dog owners that they will need to bring their dogs in more regularly for maintenance. It\u2019s a lot of work, but if they really desire a longer coat, that\u2019s what has to happen.
