Why? Well, anything called \u201cfragrance\u201d on a bottle\u2019s label can mean it is made up of hundreds or thousands of substances! Often, these fragrances contain chemicals called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewsworthy.net\/dogs\/shampoo\/5-harmful-ingredients-in-dog-shampoos-to-avoid-must-read#Fragrances\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phthalates<\/a>, which cause issues with the dog\u2019s endocrine system (hormones and glands that carry their hormones around the body). These harmful chemicals have also been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com\/20-ingredients-dont-want-dogs-shampoo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked to cancer and other illnesses in dogs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, though you want your pet, or your client\u2019s pet, to leave their grooming session smelling fresh, synthetic fragrances are not the way to do it! There are a ton of natural shampoo brands on the market that will leave dogs smelling great \u2013 without the harmful effects of chemicals!<\/p>\n<h3>Artificial Colors<\/h3>\n<p>Just like in human shampoo, colors are often added to market the brand and make the product more appealing to consumers. But, just like with fragrances, anything labeled \u201ccolor\u201d can mean thousands of chemicals. Even in \u201cnatural\u201d shampoo brands, chemical colorants may be added to mask the natural color for something more appealing. Always read the label!<\/p>\n<p>The chemicals used in coloring shampoos and products have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewsworthy.net\/dogs\/shampoo\/5-harmful-ingredients-in-dog-shampoos-to-avoid-must-read#Colorants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked to cancer and birth defects<\/a>, so it really isn\u2019t worth that pretty color.Stick to shampoos and products without any added coloring![\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;30&#8243;][image_with_animation image_url=&#8221;7506&#8243; alignment=&#8221;&#8221; animation=&#8221;Fade In&#8221; box_shadow=&#8221;none&#8221; max_width=&#8221;100%&#8221; delay=&#8221;250&#8243;][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;30&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h3>Formaldehyde Preservatives<\/h3>\n<p>This one doesn\u2019t explicitly show up on the label as \u201cformaldehyde.\u201d But, watch out for names like Brompol, Doazolidinyl urea, or DMDM hydantoin. These products contain formaldehyde and are used as a preservative for the product.<\/p>\n<p>They release the chemical slowly overtime, and have been known to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com\/20-ingredients-dont-want-dogs-shampoo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trigger an immune response<\/a>. This reaction often includes burning, itching, blistering, or scaling of the skin. Not so fun for anyone, right?<\/p>\n<h3>Isothiazolinone Preservatives<\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s another scary preservative. Similar to the previous preservative, methyl- and methylchloro-isothiazolinone are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com\/20-ingredients-dont-want-dogs-shampoo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked to immune responses<\/a>, which lead to painful skin conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, if you can\u2019t pronounce what\u2019s written on the bottle, do some serious research before buying it for your pets or clients.<\/p>\n<h3>Mineral Oils<\/h3>\n<p>Though a more naturally-sourced ingredient, mineral oil is still harmful on pets\u2019 skin. It\u2019s used in products to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com\/20-ingredients-dont-want-dogs-shampoo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retain moisture by putting a barrier over the skin<\/a>. This might sound great, but it actually keeps the dog\u2019s skin from releasing its own natural oils.<\/p>\n<p>Mineral oils are also a common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doggroomingcourse.com\/2018\/05\/food-allergies-dogs-cats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allergen in pets<\/a>. So, avoid this ingredient and allow the pet\u2019s skin to take care of itself a little! After all, that\u2019s what it was made to do!<\/p>\n<h3>Isopropyl Alcohol<\/h3>\n<p>Isopropyl alcohol is essentially rubbing alcohol. It dries out the pets hair and skin. Also, it\u2019s been shown to enhance skin absorption, which makes the skin even more susceptible to any other harmful toxins!<\/p>\n<p>Sending pets home with dry, itchy, and irritated skin is a surefire way to make your paying clients pretty unhappy. So, again we\u2019ll remind you, watch those labels![\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;30&#8243;][image_with_animation image_url=&#8221;7507&#8243; alignment=&#8221;&#8221; animation=&#8221;Fade In&#8221; box_shadow=&#8221;none&#8221; max_width=&#8221;100%&#8221; delay=&#8221;250&#8243;][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;30&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_Treats_and_Food\"><\/span>In Treats and Food<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doggroomingcourse.com\/2017\/07\/feed-pets-grooming-salon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feeding pets in your grooming salon<\/a> can be a great way to positively reinforce good behavior! But before you start handing out treats, read the labels and make sure you know if your clients have any food allergies or sensitivites! Just like shampoos and grooming products, pet food can contain many harmful substances.<\/p>\n<h3>Artificial Colors<\/h3>\n<p>First of all, dogs don\u2019t care about the color or look of their food! They\u2019re mostly colorblind anyway! So just like shampoos, colors are added to dog foods to appeal to human consumers and persuade them to buy their food. However, these colorants can be very harmful!<\/p>\n<p>Pets can be allergic to certain colorants and \u00a0are also known to <a href=\"https:\/\/pets.thenest.com\/artificial-coloring-dog-food-9166.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make pets more susceptible to viral illnesses<\/a>. If you\u2019re having a hard time finding treats that don\u2019t have colorants, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cesarsway.com\/dog-care\/nutrition\/recipes-for-quick-and-healthy-dog-treats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making your own<\/a>.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;30&#8243;][image_with_animation image_url=&#8221;7508&#8243; alignment=&#8221;&#8221; animation=&#8221;Fade In&#8221; box_shadow=&#8221;none&#8221; max_width=&#8221;100%&#8221; delay=&#8221;250&#8243;][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;30&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h3>Corn and Gluten<\/h3>\n<p>Corn and gluten are common in pet foods because they are an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedogpress.com\/DogSense\/Corn-Gluten-Meal_Beaulieu138.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inexpensive protein source<\/a>. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/petfooddiva.com\/corn-controversy-is-corn-really-bad-for-your-pet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corn contains lectins<\/a>, which can be problematic and lead to \u201cleaky gut\u201d syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>Also, corn is one of the most common allergens in pets. The allergy can lead to chronic itching, gastrointestinal tract problems (similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome), and ear or skin infections.<\/p>\n<p>Just like colorants, corn is very common in pet products and it can be difficult to find treats without it. So, when in doubt, make your own treats!<\/p>\n<h3>Unidentified \u201cByproducts\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Many pet foods and treats contain \u201canimal byproducts.\u201d If you\u2019re reading a label and this comes up, put that product down! Mysterious \u201cbyproducts\u201d can be from chicken, lamb, beef, or any other number of animals. However, the \u201cbyproducts\u201d are often made from the unwanted parts of the animal, such as diseased tissues, organs, or tumors.<\/p>\n<p>Because pet foods are not highly regulated, producers get away with this.
